Elementary, Dr. Watson!
Does a great job cutting through the PR nonsense and continues to shine a light on the somewhat questionable stock promotion business. Highly recommend others on this site to check it out.

He has free and a paid content sections - I have only used the free portion of his site.

Honest Filter of Spam
Gumshoe is pretty straightforward

he looks at touted material he either receives or has sent to him by his readers and verifies the various claims they make.

if it's teaser, he tries to deduce what investment it is and see if it matches. Usually he's pretty right.

most of what he finds is somewhat defensible embellishment but sometimes he finds outright misrepresentation.

He has a low priced pay service but the free stuff is all you really need and is mercifully not in your face about it. It's a win/win either way for readers.

He is pretty dry about it so don't expect a comedy show even though some of what he reviews if pretty funny by itself.

if you have any doubts about a promotion you receive he is a very good resource to check.

Travis is one of the good guys in the investment world.

Travis Johnson is a good guy
Like Sam Spade, the Stock Gumshoe tries mightily to do the right thing. He carefully studies the "teasers" that we ALL receive (if you really never get spam, you must not have your own computer!) and determines which particular stock or option or speculative idea the spammer proposes to reveal if only you will subscribe. I suppose his "Thinkolator" is accurate, but that is not truly all that important - Johnson is an undeniably talented writer, and is also "laugh out loud" funny.

I am not one of his "Irregulars" - subscribers to his paid content. It's not very expensive, though - just $50/year. It's just that I have often found that good, free content is not indicative of the quality of the author's paid-for articles.

He rarely endorses any of the touted companies that he detects, even though he sometimes claims to own some shares of the promoted stock. Initially, I thought that this was kinda odd. But "upon further review" I see that if he were to recommend buying the pumped stock, to maintain his ethicality (hell, is that even a word?? Forgive me, it's late!!!) he would need to tell his readers when to dump it - and that is just not his business model. For that kind of info, you'd best go follow Tim Sykes.

SG is a refreshing change from most of the free schlock offered up online.

reviews of newsletter pumps
This is an excellent site. Well written with a little humor thrown in, Gumshoe uncovers the teasers we receive via email and by mail from publishers trying to convince us to buy their newsletter. Newsletter writers must hate this site, which means its really that good. There is also a section on the site where members give their opinion of newsletters they have subscribed to, nicely done. Really a good site, and its free!

Great Investigator
The Stock Gumshoe is a detective on those frustrating "teaser" ads we all get for newsletters and gives you what the actual stock picks are. He also delves deeper into each teased pick giving as much information on the company as he can find. There is also a feedback section on each page so his readers can provide additional comments.

Overall this is a valuable free service when you just have to know what stock is being "teased" in your inbox! He takes requests by forwarding them to "[email protected]".

He also has a subsection for reviews of newsletters, very similar to those reviewed here (though his was started earlier and is more complete than this site for now).
