This is a place that seems to fly under the radar, but deserves more attention. It has just about everything you could wish for in a charting and trading platform plus an excellent paper trading feature (contrary to what a lot of people seem to think, they DO offer live trading through an affiliated brokerage, it's just not obvious anywhere on the website).

It's super value at only about $30/month (compare that with a bloated and cumbersome package like eSignal which costs 5 TIMES as much), and you can select only the data feed you actually need (for ex, if you just want the YM that's about $40/month. Compare that to what eSignal would charge for the same thing). The quality of the datastream is perfectly fine.

Custom coding is free, even if you don't get the premium package (just might take a little longer). By way of comparison, Multicharts, would charge a minimum of $500 for any coding. Backtesting functionality is also fully integrated. It's web-based, so very lightweight, and can run on Linux systems.

Support is excellent. If you have a problem, they will actually call YOU, at home, to walk you through it.

Visually, it's just beautiful and that's one of the key features for me. If you're staring at a screen for hours at a time it's very important to be visually appealing, and everything can be almost infinitely customized.

On most platforms, DOM is sort of an afterthought and very simplistic, but PRT's Order Book is one of the best I've seen anywhere, and has some really useful functionalities like bid/ask and executed volume histograms.

I would encourage anyone to try the free EOD version and just start playing around and seeing all the capabilities. Data for some instruments goes back decades and you can access almost all the same features as the paid version. I've tried just about every other platform (either as a free trial or paid version) and can honestly say this is the best I've encountered.

Free end-of-day data
As the title of my review says, Prorealtime gives you free non-intraday data on markets. That's huge. if you decide to pay you will get a platform not unlike Esignal and for almost the same prices. The platform is only a bit less intuitive than esignal. At the moment they have a free real-time data offer for several months, so it wouldn't hurt to trial.

Java based streaming quotes and charts
If you're looking for a new streaming quote and chart application, this is a website that is gaining some attention. ProRealtime offfers two types of subscriptions: a free end-of-day package and a real time package. The website appears to be marketed towards Europeans but they do offer U.S. priced subscriptions to Americans. When you subscribe, you download a Java executable (,jnlp) and launch it every time from the subscriber's login page. The Java executable is dependent on the login page and cannot be launched separately. It doesn't appear to be an actual program that you install on a client machine but is more like a server based application. This could be good for people who travel a lot or who don't have access to a dedicated PC. All that is required is a PC with a web browser and the latest version of Java installed. According to the FAQ, it appears to be Mac friendly too. Linux and handhelds could possibly work but they haven't been tested thoroughly. The program does have some nice visual charts, built-in pattern recognition, and numerous features. They also offer a live paper trading feature which can help novice traders practice their skills but it requires a real-time subscription package. This website is definitely worth checking out if you use technical analysis in your trading.
