I read his articles once in a while
I read his articles once in awhile. Sometimes he has good insight. After following his trades, he does not have a good record or call on the market. He hedges so he will always have winners and losers. But he only boast about what he gained and does not talk about the losing side of his hedge.

His overall market calls are BS. In options trades, he does things in his virtual account that most brokerages does not allow you to do. Those options trades might only be possible in high balance accounts in limit brokerages.

Best Membership Site I have seen
I find PSW to be the best resource I have found. Using Phil as a simple "buy this, sell that site" it not the purpose. Phil does provide education, lots of it. This education is not simple. It took me several months to start to see the logic in his trades. Phil manages a rather large portfolio and if you are trying to fit all of his ideas into a smaller one, it can be a challenge and as someone else mentioned, it can leave you over leveraged.

The PSW community is an outstanding group. When I have messed up trades, I have been able to get help from Phil or other members rather quickly. Several members are accomplished traders and they will frequently help other members with trade ideas or trade management.

There is no shortage of education on PSW. I have taken over 200 pages of typed notes on trading.

I have do agree that Phil does a lot of commentary about world events. I frequently do not agree with his political ideas, but I have not found this to detract from the site. There can be some spirited discussion between Phil and other members, but these sections are usually after the market closes and can be easily filtered out.

Amazing Investing Community
Joining Philstockworld is a life-changing experience that takes you from the wrong side of what Phil calls "the stock market casino" to the other.

In some ways, becoming a member at PSW is like accepting the red pill in The Matrix - once you go in, you can't go back as Phil teaches members an entirely new way of playing the market, selling options rather than being the "sucker" who buys them.

There are portfolios to follow but the site is mainly about education. Phil doesn't want people on the site who just follow trades, he expects the members to participate and contribute and they do, with about 200 comments a day in the chat room, which is most active during the US market hours and could use a few more European investors.

We learn how to select stocks, how to balance our portfolios and how to use stock options to mitigate risk, hedge our positions, generate and income and leverage our buying power but, most importantly, we learn when to do these things. Diving into PSW is a commitment to getting a real education in the markets and it's not for everyone - but it should be.

A last note to traders - Phil often puts up free posts on his Facebook page as well as on Seeking Alpha, which is where I found him. I suggest following his trades for a while before diving in to a full membership, as it's a serious commitment to studying and learning his system, which some people never quite get while others become lifetime fans.

His Facebook page is here: http://www.facebook.com/philstockworld2

Seeking Alpha is here: http://seekingalpha.com/author/philip-davis/instablog

Just read a few posts and you'll see what I mean.

Not a useful service
I was a member for 6 months, explored Phil's advice and followed his opinions and predictions. I felt that he did not really explain the essential elements of investing judgment and was unclear about the time frame of his investment advice. I found his economic predictions and analysis to be stilted and thin, bordering on trivial, and useless for investing. I agree with his general understanding of the manipulation and corruption of the market, but this is not sufficient to be predictive. And while Phil claims that he's not in the prediction business this is not true: investing is successful only to the extent that one can make correct predictions, and know the know the probability of error associated with those predictions.

Phil is basically to investing as a liberal-minded host would be to talk radio. I did enjoy his political rants, but even there, as I learn more history, I see him doing more grandstanding than educating.

I recall he once lambasted a republican member who referred to the money-losing US Post Office as indicative of the waste in government. Phil responded that the person was foolish because they didn't know the post office was subsidized in order to make mail affordable and to provide postal service to everyone. It turns out Phil was wrong: the US Post Office is a fiscal wreck, nearing insolvency, and is not meant to subsist on Federal bailouts. What's more, government postal services in other countries are being creative and profitable and the USPO is an especially bad example of how to run a postal service. This information would have been available to Phil if he'd done some research, but he rarely does. And when confronted with contrary facts his usual response is ad hominum to the extreme.

Basically according to Phil, if you don't tow Phil's line you're an ass hole and he encourages you to leave his forum. I should add that my politics are probably quite far to the LEFT of Phil's and I don't think he goes far enough in calling for reform. That being said, I feel that if one is going to be a public voice one should be a responsible one.

There are several habits of his that are less than forthright. He brooked little criticism, terminated members who suspected he engaged in "smoke and mirrors," and never kept track of the success or failure of his advice/investment opinions. That was too much work, he said.

His basic philosophy is to create synthetic options positions and to sell OTM calls to collect time premium. But he does not educate people about the extra risks that this leverage involves, and the variety of strategies one needs to know when events turn against you. His strategies look good in the present time frame, but when things turn sour down the road he's no longer available to explain himself or take the blame.

Having said that, I do think that if you're going to be a long-term investor then you must know how to sell option time premium and the benefits of selling off the less likely extremely large gains by selling OTM call options. That being said, however, selling options adds a different element of time frame risk that requires a better understanding of probabilities, of PREDICTION, than I felt was reflected anywhere in Phil's Stock World.

Finally, I feel Phil stuffs his site with people who claim to be winners using his approach. I was suspicious of this from the start as these people are poorly identified, they're just voices on the web. Some of them were day traders who would post a running tab on their winnings and issue buy/sell recommendations in what looked like a manner that another trader might find useful.

I have since become a day trader myself and I am offended that Phil allows people who claim to day trade to post their recommendations. Day trading is difficult and risky, and timing is everything. It would be very difficult to post day trading signals "off the cuff." To do so without a proper analysis of the risks that you see in each trade is irresponsible.

Phil did not seem to either know this or care about it. It gave his site the appearance of being a band of winners. Given that his advice was useless, and generated quite regular losses for me, his membership policies prejudicial, and his sense of responsibility to readers weak to nil, I advise against membership.

If you do join, and there are things that can be learned, then do not follow any suggestion or advice that you do not fully understand. It is my claim that if you are careful and thorough you will not find useful investment advice in Phil's Stock World.

Well worth the read even for non-members
Even if you are a non-member and have to wait a day to read the entire articles here, I highly recommend following Phil’s articles. They are extremely insightful and educational – be sure to check out his recent commentary on the mortgage fiasco and what might be next. Apparently he’s a guru in options as well! This guy definitely knows his stuff!

Phil = Options Man Of The Year
I don't know much about options, but my beginner mind tells me Phil is one of the better options teachers out there. Like me, he spends the vast majority of his life typing away, trying to make his points, hoping that he can reach others. When we first started working on our join options DVD, I knew absolutely nothing...now I know a bit more and I'm still learn. Phil's awesome blog and website helps me learn more and one of these days we're gonna finish our options DVD. For now, Phil has a hardcore community who truly respect him as the great teacher he is.
