The concept is so simple. You are given a stock chart of a real company but with no name or dates. As you step through the chart one day at a time you can choose whether to buy or sell your position. It keep track of your return percentage vs. a "buy and hold" strategy. When you are done or feel like moving on to the next chart you see the name of the stock and the time period you were trading. When you are completely done you get a nice report of how well you performed across all charts.
I love this site. When you filter out all the noise of news, predictions, etc. and just get down to good old-fashioned technical analysis you really can generate modest returns. This simple game provides a nice "gut check" on whether your technical analysis skills are solid or not. It's almost like a mini-back test of a trading strategy. Do you have a new trading idea and want to see if it pans out? Play the game for a little while and see if you would have made money. It's almost a shame that it is called a "game" since it helps educate, test, and sharpen your trading skills.
Of course, filtering out the noise is also the weakness of this game. Without real money on the line or the barrage of market news you aren't simulating one of the largest aspects of trading -- managing your emotions. Also, because you do not know the time window you never know when you might hit gaps because of huge market news or earnings. For example, I would never trade a stock around earnings but you don't know when that period takes place during the game.
A few minutes of this game will now be in my nightly rotation of "things to do when I come home from work." It's fun, educational, and doesn't need a huge investment of time or money.
