Max is a genius mathematician who's built a supercomputer at home that provides something that can be understood as a key for understanding all existence. Representatives both from a Hasidic cabalistic sect and high-powered Wall Street firm hear of that secret and attempt to seduce him.

Great debut
Whoa, now here's a debut anyone would be proud of. It's got the obvious touches of amateur production, but Aronofsky displays an impressive ambition and thematic scope that just commands respect. It's tough to make a gripping thriller from number theory, yet that's exactly what we have here. Weird, wonderful, transfixing, and terrifying, it brings to mind the works of, among others, Lynch and Cronenberg, the strange surrealism and body horror aspects scattered throughout among the finest things on display, contributing a disquieting eeriness that's invaluable to making it quite so engrossing. Performances waver, plot gets too heavy in the final moments, certain angles really don't work, but I was enjoying it too much to care.

Indie film at its best
'Pi' is independent filmmaking at its best. Without the constraints of the studio/corporate system, Aronofsky and Gullette created a film that is bizarre, intelligent, and unlike anything that came out of Hollywood in the 1990's. Who would have thought to blend Wall Street, the Kabbalah, computer science, Go, number theory, and the most fascinating number in the universe in a solute of obsessive-compulsive, paranoid genius and then strain through gritty B&W cinematography and hyperkinetic editing? The mixture is definitely not for everybody, but I certainly loved it.

Plus the soundtrack (featuring Orbital, Clint Mansell, Aphex Twin. Gus Gus, Spacetime Continuum, and other techno talents) just flat-out rocks.

A Good Start for Darren Aronofsky
Pi is Darren Aronofsky's gritty black and white breakthrough full-length film. It's weird and experimental, but not to the point that it feels like he was trying too hard to be obscure.

The movie is trippy to say the least, but in a compelling way. The characters are bizarre and their intentions seem to venture beyond reality, but none of these many synonyms should necessarily be taken negatively. In fact the screenplay, which is creative and original (at this point I'm running out of adjectives and may reach for the nearest online thesaurus), creates a believable reality out of unbelievable situations and characters.

Just as pleasing is its soundtrack, featuring great electronic artists from the 90s, some of whom are still relevant today (e.g. Aphex Twin).

Definitely worth checking out. However, it's not a first date movie. I'm not sure Darren Aronofsky does date movies.

Educational value? Maybe it isn't pi, maybe it's phi. Probably shouldn't look to Greek letters for solving the stock market.

Entertaining, strange, complex, brain-stimulating gonzo film
Without giving the plot away, the central character, Max, labors like a slave under his own genius while outside pressures are constantly prodding him for their own selfish wants. Max has to find a resolution for the imbalance between his pursuit of higher truths and the worldly temptations which try to steal that away.

A very entertaining indie-style film. Recommended.

Obscure
While there is plenty of potential to be interesting in this film, they have so blurred the edge between art and reality that you can't tell if the entire picture takes place in Max's head, or if some of it was supposedly real. I expect there are some who will say that was the point of the picture. My point is that with no anchor in reality I can't tell if the Director has done a super job of confusing his audience, or is just not smart enough to know you can't fix a computer with a quarter inch drill. Oh, and its in black and white.

What all crazy maths guys should be like!
This film broke new ground and still looks current today. Brilliantly shot and a great story to boot. There is a fine line between madness and genius and this guy uses it as a tightrope.

Unique Movie
Pi is the first film by Darren Aronofsky. The low budget black and white film about numbers and the Jewish religion is an interesting and intelligent movie with a unique look.
