The concept of the show was to see if a sucessful trader could take a group of inexperienced amatuers and turn them into profitable traders in just a short amount of time. If this sounds familiar, yes similar experiments have been done (The Turtles) but not many have had the benefit of being captured in real time on video for all to see.
The group of traders that were selected to participate are a pretty varied group, from young to old, male/female, and different ethnicities (although I should state that they are all from England where this show takes place). Each member of the group is allotted money to trade with initailly (I believe it was $50,000) with an increase in trading funds for successful trading. The trader who earned the most money at the end of the 3 week period would be declared the winner and offered a full-time position at the show creator's trading desk.
While that seems like an interesting concept, it falls short of the mark. It's really unbelievable just how many of the people selected for the group are whiny, nervous, scared, and basically useless as traders. Many traders quit or get fired, have difficulty coming up with ideas, argue with each other, copy each other's trades, and generally just fail miserably. I feel as though some of the blame for these failures is due to the training they recieved, which, to me seemed less than spectacular. They were given minimal supervision and no real clear sense of what they should be doing, mostly left to their own devices. Their trading style seemed based entirely on fundamentals, and it wasn't suiting them very well lol.
Of the entire group, only 3 people made the cut and actually began to figure things out. One of those traders posted a small loss, one a .5% win and one a 1% win. The woman who posted the 1% profit was offered a job which she turned down! She said he would rather raise her baby or something similar. In that sense the show was a trainwreck but still I found it interesting to watch the dynamic of the group and the psychology involved in trying to mold yourself into a success at something you have never done in a relatively short amount of time. The amount of fail in this show proves how difficult trading can really be.
