George Bailey has spent his entire life giving of himself to the people of Bedford Falls. He has always longed to travel but never had the opportunity in order to prevent rich skinflint Mr. Potter from taking over the entire town. All that prevents him from doing so is George's modest building and loan company, which was founded by his generous father. But on Christmas Eve, George's Uncle Billy loses the business's $8,000 while intending to deposit it in the bank. Potter finds the misplaced money and hides it from Billy. When the bank examiner discovers the shortage later that night, George realizes that he will be held responsible and sent to jail and the company will collapse, finally allowing Potter to take over the town. Thinking of his wife, their young children, and others he loves will be better off with him dead, he contemplates suicide. But the prayers of his loved ones result in a gentle angel named Clarence coming to earth to help George, with the promise of earning his wings. He shows George what things would have been like if he had never been born. In a nightmarish vision in which the Potter-controlled town is sunk in sex and sin, those George loves are either dead, ruined, or miserable. He realizes that he has touched many people in a positive way and that his life has truly been a wonderful one.

"Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like It's A Wonderful Life.

Does it take me back to that place in my heart, that makes me long for everything that once was great and it could be again? Does it remind me of my childhood, Christmas in my home? No. Maybe it's just simply what I always wanted from life and every man I want to be.

Everything about this film is well for lack of better words, perfect. No question to it any longer, the best performance by an actor I have ever seen. It's more than just beautiful, timeless or fair. All of Stewart is revealed. Everything coming together for Capra. Lionel Barrymore at his best, which seems to be his worst.

Sometimes I think there is a reason why somethings happen. And I'm pretty sure there is some magical reason why this film was made. I'm 27 years old and saw it for the first time Christmas Eve of this year. I've watched it 3 times since. The only movie to ever make me cry. I probably wouldn't have all the answers for you, if you asked me why. I'm still trying to figure Stewart out and just how beautiful was Reed.

What can I say? This movie is a life changing experience.

Makes me feel good to be alive. What a wonderful little world it is. And if I waited my entire life, it would not be a waste of time."

Funny, touching ... great film for the whole family to enjoy
Yes, I just watched this movie on Christmas Day '11! I remembered my uncle telling me about it years ago.

The lesson I took from this movie was actually a personal reminder to not allow your mind to get so bogged down with money issues that you lose touch with life and those you love.

Also, if you treat people well, you'll never be left alone when life takes a downturn.

George, the lead character, is a good person. He adores his family and, as a businessman, treats his customers with the utmost respect. But as George finds himself falling further in the pit of financial doom, his slow brewing bitterness turns to anger. In a final fit of rage, he lashes out at his family and storms out the house. He renders himself worthless and wishes he was never born.

Remember the saying, "Be careful what you wish for"? Well, an angel from heaven comes down to grant George that wish by erasing his entire past. No one remembers him, and no one cares. After finally coming to the realization that this is now his reality - not an angel's hoax - and that he is truly alone in this world, he begs for his life back and is granted that wish. When he returns home, not only is his family relieved to find him back safe, but hundreds of the townspeople arrive at his home to bestow upon him thousands of dollars to relieve him of his financial burden. Courtesy of the angel.

Money comes, money goes, but the love of family and friends is priceless and eternal.

A Classic
George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) thinks he has a dreadful life. He runs a loan association in the small town of Bedford Falls. The company is always on the verge of bankruptcy and is constantly fighting the evil Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). He is married to an adoring wife (Donna Reed) and has three children. One Christmas Eve he is on the verge of suicide until his guardian angel (Henry Travers) shows up to stop him.

No other word for it--it's a classic! Hard to believe this was a bomb when it first came out...it's reputation didn't even start till the early 1980s with repeated television showings. Basically, there's nothing wrong with the film. The script is well-written with realistic well-drawn characters.

What really makes it work is that the movie doesn't make Stewart a goody two shoes--he's really unhappy and mean in the first section of the film. It makes his "transformation" at the end more believable and realistic. Also it's one of the few movies that has an ending that will have the entire audience crying--out of happiness.

The acting is just great all across the board, the set design incredible (Bedford Falls was on a sound stage!) and is heart warming without getting too sentimental. I usually hate films like this but I've loved this since the first time I saw it and make it a point to see it every Christmas. A true classic. Highly recommended.

Its Mom's favorite movie...
...and that's not really a good thing. The story of a man who is basically a prick gets to see what life would be like if he were never born. Sappy, cheesy, corny, cliche, call it what you will, this film is all of those things and more. I never liked it or understood the appeal. I guess there are life lessons in there but they are so sugar coated it makes my teeth hurt. If you're looking for a good Jimmy Stewart movie that is far more entertaining, check out "Harvey". He's a grown man whose best friend is an imaginary bunny. Hilarous movie unlike this boring dreck.

A Classic
The movie opens with everyone praying in their homes for someone in distress. That's something you don't see anymore in movies. While modern movies seem to cheer on someone's self-destruction, this movie routes for the "good guy." It combines faith, finances, history, and humor all in a single movie. If you've been too busy since 1946, it's time to clear two hours in your schedule and watch it.

Sugary for sure but beautiful
Nothing like the perspective of seeing what the world would be like if you had not lived in it.

Just In Case
Just in case the markets crash again while you're in them, it's better to have a positive perspective. A classic..better at Christmas-time.
