The Smartest Guys in the Room

Category: Books
What went wrong with American business at the end of the 20th century? Until the spring of 2001, Enron epitomized the triumph of the New Economy. Feared by rivals, worshipped by investors, Enron seemingly could do no wrong. Its profits rose every year; its stock price surged ever upward; its leaders were hailed as visionaries. Then a young Fortune writer, Bethany McLean, wrote an article posing a simple question - how, exactly, does Enron make its money?

They thought they were the smartest guys...
Great book on the Enron scandal that lead to sweeping changes in the way companies do business in the US (think Sarbanes-Ox). The authors get it that trying to explain the complexities of the Enron business dealings is better left to others and keep everything in the easy to understand column. This makes the book a fast read and focuses the reader on the real issues behind the Enron collapse - greed, hubris, denial, greed etc...

Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, Ken Fastow are profiled worts and all, maybe the best business book on business ethics written in the last twenty years... If you like business books this is a must read!!!

read this for class, very fun
Just read this last semester for class and it was a great read, fun, easy and quite amusing. I actually learned a lot about Enron than information from the Web, it really went into the nitty gritty information I did not know about the great Enron!

Definitely a must read also, pick it up for a weekend read!

Great review of Enron fraud- learn about repeating history!
If you think Enron will never happen again, it's time to wake up. Read this book, or watch the associated documentary, and learn how much profit incentive exists for companies to do the exact same thing that Enron did. Excellent, excellent exposé that only came a few years too late to save a lot of investors a lot of money.
