Category: Books
Written by acclaimed financial writer Jack D. Schwager and first published in 1989, this book profiles the most successful traders and money managers of the late 20th century – figures such as Richard Dennis (who turned a mere $400 into over $200 million over a 17-year period), Paul Tudor Jones (who compiled a record of five consecutive triple-digit return years with very low equity drawdown), Michael Steinhardt (30% annualized return over a 21-year period ending Spring 1988), William O’Neil (founder of Investor’s Business Daily), and Jim Rogers (co-founder of the Quantum Fund with George Soros). This book is a compilation of interviews conducted by the author – covering the beliefs, trading styles, and the successes and failures of all these traders. A truly timeless work and well worth reading by anyone who trades in our financial markets today.

Disappointing book: the worst of the series
I am talking about "Stock Market Wizards" book here originally published in 2001. This is the last book of the "Market Wizards" series. The two previous books were:

* Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders (1992)

* The New Market Wizards: Conversations with America's Top Traders (1994)

In the previous books, you could read dialogues with Paul Tudor Jones, Jim Rogers, William O'Neil, Bruce Kovner, Richard Dennis, Ed Seykota, Stanley Druckenmiller. I mean people who are famous and still well respected twenty years after the books.

In "Stock Market Wizards", not such thing. Sure, you get some people who are still famous but not all are well respected! Some of these traders were fraudsters, some had blown up their accounts, and some other are really suspects.

You can still get some good information about discipline for instance from Mark Minervini's interview. But you will get the same pieces of information if you read any recent interview from the internet.

For the rest, you need to some experience in order to split the wheat from the chaff. If you know your subject, you can read this book for recreational purpose. If you're a newbie, forget it: you may learn wrong stuff and it is very hard to un-learn!

A huge fan of this inspirational book
There are so many books that interview specialists in a niche, but when Stock Market Wizards was written the idea was revolutionary. It's a great read, educational, inspirational. Of course it's dated now but still many of the messages are timeless.

The original
The first of its kind. Jack Schwager interviews legendary traders about their style of trading. There is a lot of noise in this industry, but these traders are the type of people you want to listen to. Jack's commentary is also quite good.
