Value-investing-in-what-you-know outdated fluff
A value investor's book. Sounds good in-theory, no longer relevant to the hyperspeed markets of today. Read for historical perspective, entertainment, or a basis to thinking in fundamental investing. The line stops there.

Great book
Lynch is terrific, like his style, all though his ideas could be a little outdated.... this book shows you it's not all about fancy analyses in choosing good stocks, just open your eyes and see how the company appears to you

For Investing only
For those who buy stocks for the long term which is a dying breed, this book is useful. It covers some important basic aspects of fundamental analysis. If you are looking to find companies that have growth potentail this book has insights. Has the market changed since it was written? probably. Does that fact take away the value of the book? not really.

The book is an interesting read. It isnot too academic but reading it will enhance one's knowledge of how profssional money manegers select stocks for the long term. It is a book for the laymen.

Great for those long-term investors that are just starting.
This book is somewhat a double-edged sword.

The good:

The basics taught in this book are very important for all "long" investors. Lynch claims that the "main-street" investor has all the tools he/she needs to beat wall street analysts, their eyes. By looking around and noticing trends in your area can lead to stock tips. Maybe a restaurant has been opened for over a year but it still takes 90 minutes to get seated on a Wednesday night. Or the traveling salesman notices that the new LaQuinta motels are just as comfortable as Holiday Inn for 1/2 the price. Lynch tries to explain that to be a successful stock picker, you have to realize that the companies you are investing in are living, breathing entities and not just some ticker symbol that magically changes in price due to wall street voodoo.

The bad:

I feel like this book is outdated. The sentiment around many investors is that "buy and hold is dead". Now, I don't think this is 100% true, but the days of holding a company for 100 years may be over. Most of the charts in the book are from the 70s and 80s and some of the book I had trouble relating to as a 24 year old.

Overall:

I would recommend this book for all new investors. It does contain a wealth of information concerning company financials and various ratios you should know. It also explains the basics of cyclicals, stalwarts, slow growers, fast growers, etc.

A joke
Readers will learn what stocks to avoid, how to decipher Wall Street-speak, how to design a perfect portfolio, and countless ways to succeed in business

That sentence is from the PR for the book. I think the stupidity of what this book offers is self-evident....

worthless
I know that I will be in the minority in posting a negative review of this book, but this book is damaging and will not make you money. Lynch vastly oversimplifies things and the advice is written at a 4th grade level.

Fabulous Book!
I reread this book every year, I think I enjoy more every time! This book was a first for the industry when it came out, he proclaimed that a "professional investor" was an oxymoron setting the stage, albeit with a large hand from the internet for a new breed of investors and some would argue markets. I love this book so much for it's very laymen way of going about, he doesn't go about brushing broad strokes of his knowledge giving as example company ABC, but points to specific stocks he bought and sold. Going into all the details as if he was still a majority shareholder. A very good book!
