Helped me...But Terribly Written.
A Trader's First Book on Commodities was suggested to me by a fellow trader. I was looking to explore futures contracts, and this gave me an understanding of what exactly futures and commodities are. I was pretty excited to receive this book and heres what I think.

This book does: Give you basic details of popular commodities and futures, contract size, tick value.

This book does not: Give you any insight on how to begin trading, set you in the right direction or even give you a vague idea on how to trade these instruments.

Garner goes on for page after page explaining the trade off between paying high commission with a full service broker with that of a lighter, cheaper brokerage. This is painful. And, sadly, this is how the whole bloody book is structured. She will explain one thing the same way over and over again, and then regurgitate this information at least once more in a subsequent chapter. Every paragraph reads like a summary, and I just wanted to throw the book at someone so many times while reading it. You are not getting anywhere fast reading this puppy. I did however get what I required out of the book, which is "what are these things and why do they exist?", but I felt like my mother and every school teacher I ever had was beating me dead while reading it. But hey, we're in finance not philosophy right?

I say you read this if you have no clue about these markets and the instruments within them. But give the 'author' what she deserves once you're done - and thats a bad review!

I used to use the book as my mouse pad, but it has has since been replaced by Japanese Candlestick Charting which is AWESOMELY useful and I'm still picking it up every few days and flipping through the pages. You can find my review on that book here: http://www.investimonials.com/books/reviews-japanese-candlestick-charting-techniques-second-edition.aspx
