In Good Company

Category: Entertainment
Dan Foreman is headed for a shakeup. He is demoted from head of ad sales for a major magazine when the company he works for is acquired in a corporate takeover. His new boss, Carter Duryea, is half his age--a business school prodigy who preaches corporate synergy. While Dan develops clients through handshake deals and relationships, Carter cross-promotes the magazine with the cell phone division and Krispity Krunch, an indeterminate snack food under the same corporate umbrella. Both men are going through turmoil at home. Dan has two daughters, Alex, age 18, and Jana, age 16, and is shocked when his wife tells him she's pregnant with a new child. Carter, in the meanwhile, is dumped by his wife of seven months just as he gets his promotion. Dan and Carter's uneasy friendship is thrown into jeopardy when Carter falls for, and begins an affair with, Dan's daughter Alex.

Fresh comic thinking spices up this smart cookie of a satire from director-writer Paul Weitz (About a Boy). He makes it sexually provocative and subversively hilarious."

Dennis Quaid and the Score save the day...
In Good Company doesn't boast an extraordinary story or superior acting, yet is an entertaining flick. Scarlett Johansson and Topher Grace didn't quite convince me, yet Dennis Quaid delivers a solid performance as a charismatic and good-hearted middle-aged dad. The characters are too superficial and hollow, so in the end only Dennis Quaid manages to fill his character with life and make him believable. What makes this flick very much worth to see however, is the outstanding (for a common-place average Hollywood comedy that is) soundtrack to the movie. The songs are chosen very well and knit the images together to an entertaining family story that could happen everyday.

Great Performances, Good Story...Good Directing
I found this movie to be very solid from the beginning to the end with great script and great acting. Dennis Quaid gives an excellent performance as a sales executive in his fifties who faces the same threat that many people faced with in his age, being perceived as "member of the old school" and as such maybe replaced with "younger blood". Things are getting more complicated as his values and need to "survive" in a new corporate environment (corporate restructuring) collide. Interestingly I did not find this movie funny, although most critics praise this film as a great comedy. It has its moments but there are no belly laughs and I do not a say this as a negative thing. I was very happy to see on the DVD's extras that some of the "funny part" ended on the cutting floor, living us with a movie that is more sarcastic and dramatic and as such it can be taken more seriously. I also liked (what actually disappointed many) that some wishes, hopes stay unfulfilled and that makes the storyline more real. I am glad that the movie stayed away from the perfect ending. So, what makes this movie to fall short from being rated better? Some minor "slips" that wants to tie up loose ends, like: the bad guy got what he deserves and in the process becomes a caricature of himself… bad choice; Dan's speech to the "big boss" is something that would never happen in real life, and only happens in this movie to make sure everyone (in the audience) would get the "real meaning" of this movie… unnecessary; and some other little things.

just ok...
This movie had so much promise and for some reason it just failed to deliver. I can't tell if its the lack of chemistry between the couple or Denis Quaid's inability to act his age but the film lacked feeling. The acting was ok, the story was interesting but ultimately it was just another average dramatic comedy. I'd recommend you redbox/ netflix it, don't bother buying the DVD.

Heart Warming
This is a story of takeovers, and people clawing their way to the top at the expense of others. It does have some nice undertones of a romance, and life lessons of a young corporate execute, learning from a seasoned veteran about the important things in life.

Nice plot and funny. it is true that the younger workers are taking higher roles in the company while the older employees are getting fired.

Dragged into this shit bath
Give me a break! This movie is clearly why Topher Grace showed he belonged in Spider-man 3, because they both sucked.

funny i guess
I watched this movie more than 50 times at least from 2005

to learn English. I was a real FOB and chose this one as my English video lesson.

some thoughtful lessons

unfortunately my english became more like carter, young guy, in 2005,which is very stupid.

overall, good movie..
