Inspired by a true story, 21 mixes Las Vegas casino wheeling and dealing with college-kid angst. Kevin Spacey is crafty MIT professor Micky Rosa, who trains gifted students to count cards and then flies them out to Vegas to raid the blackjack tables between classes. At first they rake in a bundle, but then catch the unwanted attention of tough-guy security chief, Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne) who wants to prove himself before he's replaced by face recognition software. Maths genius Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) originally joins the ring in order to come up with the $300,000 he needs for tuition money, but he's also smitten with the ring's resident babe, Jill (Kate Bosworth). When he finds out Professor Rosa hasn't been dealing entirely from a straight deck, Ben's high-end shopping spree dreams turn sour (though card counting is not illegal) and the battle of wits is on, no second chances given. Spacey is in his preternaturally calm, morally compromised element, stealing scenes left and right; Fishburne brings the hangdog depth; and director Robert Luketic (LEGALLY BLONDE) succeeds in making the film glossy, stylish and thrilling. 21 is based on the bestseller BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE by Ben Mezrich.

Enjoyable Hollywood version
My wife and I watched this a few months ago and enjoyed it. It's supposedly based on a true story, but that doesn't mean much as the finished product is probably vastly different than to what really happened. (I may take the advice of another reviewer and find a book about the story.)

Other than the part of the plot where the scam is exposed and they're physically assaulted by casino security--did that really happen?--I thought the movie was pretty well done. Obviously only a fragment of the truth must be in the movie for the studio to claim that it's "based on a true story" but nonetheless...

Other than Kevin Spacey the cast is not well known, but the movie is still very entertaining.

Good
Based on the true story of a bunch of MIT geeks who hit Las Vegas for a winning run on the blackjack tables before casino security cottoned on, this is a great idea for a movie but not a great movie.

In essence, it adheres to the evergreen guys-on-a-mission template, with hard-up undergrad, Ben (Jim Sturgess, lightweight but passable) fearing he’ll be priced out of Harvard Medical School. He is lured by maths professor Rosa (Kevin Spacey, urbane but hokey) into a guerrilla unit of his best students ready to take on the baize tables: his argument is that twenty-one is a simple game, and by remembering which cards have been dealt, you give yourself a better chance of knowing when to fold or take a chance.

Prospects look good for the rest of the picture at this stage, but disappointment takes over with the realisation it’s all being pitched to a pre-teen audience, smoothing out potentially juicy moral dilemmas and sanitising the grown-up throb of the Vegas experience into anodyne glitz.

Actually, there’s something rather pernicious in the way the film drools over the towering chips, palatial suites and incipient gambling fever, as if to tantalise viewers way too young to be admitted to these very establishments; all of which hardly keeps us on-message that friendship’s a greater prize than cash alone. The whizzo-conceit and slick visual bling do give it an undeniably diverting buzz, yet the movie’s cautionary formula shows its hand way before the clunky final reel."

Decent movie
This is a decent movie for entertainment based on a true story but nothing more than that. You'll find it difficult to relate to trading, the desire to make a money is something that is common to trading and gambling. The story is based on a MIT college group of 6 who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.

mind set
this movie is good i guess it on here because in the movie they are counting cards in vegas. It relates to trading because if you can find a stradgy or and price point it is simular to counting card.Ithink i it is kind of like riminscences of a stock operator where if you can look for key numbers you can beat the house .Anyway it all realtes to the mentallity a trader should have when it come to trading look for a edge and stay there never play ... well in this care never trade unless you have the edge on a trade .THis is a great movie to watch to get you in to the mind set of trading even through in this movie they are using math to count cards i think its the way a person should approach trading it makes you think out side the boxand thats how traders should think. looking for key price points and volume .anyway oeverall the movie is good and the acting is ok to say the least but i like it because it get me in a look for the edge kind of a mood.

cool, fun movie
Entertaining movie that takes you into the world of high stakes blackjack , card counting teams and what people will do to get an edge. Loved it since I used to go to Vegas a lot

to play and once was banned from a casino in Tahoe for counting.

movie makes you play blackjack
This is a great movie for entertainment and it is based on a true story. You will want to play blackjack after you finish this movie. At least, that's what happened to me.

Spacey gets the job done
while the rest of the story is scum and the actual story is about Jeffrey Ma( I believe that's the name), who gets a cameo as a dealer.

The love story pretty much ruins this.

Ok!
This movie is OK. Do not expect to get anything out of it because this movie is made just for entertainment purposes "Hollywood style" so if you want to entertain yourself a bit go ahead and watch it. By the way it is based in a "True Story" I always wonder how much true there is in every of this type of movies

Not a fan
From beginning to end the movie flowed very well. There were no plot holes. The main character is very likable which most of the characters are, but it was just a decent movie to watch. It has some good humor and crazy suspense as well. You do not have to play or understand black jack to enjoy this film.
