I chose ING because they seemed the best for my particular situation; namely, a full-time student with little money. ING has high-yield checking accounts compared to their competitors (or at least they did when I joined about a year ago) which is the main reason I chose them. I'm also a big fan of handling things myself rather than having to rely on other people so the fact that this is exclusively an online bank appeals to me two-fold: No dealing with people in a brick-and-mortar location, and it's good for the environment (ING is a paperless bank).
All the drawbacks to having an exclusively online bank also seem well addressed by ING as well. Checks can be mailed in to deposit and even mailed out to an address of your choice.
What I like most about ING though is that being an online bank, they are well adapted to emerging technologies, already having very neat and functional apps to go along with the bank. With my smartphone I can easily manipulate my money quickly and easily which is something I value highly.
